How To Renovate A Bathroom On A Budget

Want to give your bathroom a revamp but don’t have a huge budget?

No problem!

There are plenty of ways to transform your drab or outdated bathroom into a soothing, stylish space – without spending tens of thousands of dollars.

By being a savvy shopper, focusing on the right fittings, and tackling a bit of DIY, you can add value to your home with an affordable bathroom renovation.

But, you don’t need to do it all yourself.

Here are our top tips on how to renovate a bathroom on a budget.

Keep Fixtures Where They Are

The best way to keep expenses low is to stick with your existing layout. If you decide to move your shower, toilet, sink, or tub, you’ll need to completely change the room's general design, including all the plumbing behind the walls and under the floorboards.

This doesn’t mean you can’t upgrade anything, of course. Only that you should keep the fixtures where they are. Swapping old pipework for new is faster and cheaper than re-configuring pipes and adding fixtures in places where there are none.

Choose Floor Standing Products

Need some more storage space?

Shop around for freestanding products instead of wall-mounted ones. If you’re attaching heavier items to the walls, you might end up needing structural work to ensure they can bear the weight.

Once you head into that territory, the costs can rapidly shoot up.

Floor standing products can simply be installed onto your new or existing flooring without the need for too many expensive attachments.

Shop Smart

Replacing your fixtures and fittings is an excellent way to greatly change the look of your bathroom with minimal effort (and investment). From tapware and towel rails to your toilet seat, a few simple updates can make all the difference. The trick is knowing which vendors offer the most value.

Trade Depot is a fantastic place to grab quality affordable fixtures and fittings. They offer plenty of basic options at a good price. You can shop online or visit their Christchurch or Auckland showrooms. Universal Plumbing Plus is also a great option and offers the next step up on Trade Depot’s range.

Alternatively, you can purchase second-hand items. Not only will you save money, but you’ll be scoring green points by reusing recycled items. Trademe is a great place to start browsing.

DIY Painting

A fresh coat of paint is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to revamp your bathroom. Make sure the paint you choose is suitable for wet areas.

While some bathroom renovation projects may require an expert, painting isn’t necessarily one of them. We can help you with more complicated things like gib stopping, and you can tackle the painting on your own to save money. Because a bathroom is generally a small space, you should be able to wrap it up in a day or two.

Update Your Tiles

New tiles can take your bathroom from drab to fab without too much effort or expense.

However, brand new tiles can be expensive. Save money by checking out the clearance section at The Tile Depot for end of line items (or browse through Trademe). You might just find your perfect colour or design is on sale.

You can also refresh your bathroom by revitalising your grout and silicone for a tile transformation. We offer a range of services to clean and polish your existing tiles or to completely replace your silicone. Check out the bathroom refresh options here.

Be Opportunistic

Take advantage of opportunities to get more than one job done at a time. If you are tackling one job at a time, then you pay for separate labour charges and materials each time. Instead of that, it is more cost-effective to combine jobs.

For example, if we are opening walls to replace pipes, we can install insulation at the same time to save you money down the track.

Invest In A Showerdome

While you are on the task of renovating a bathroom, think about changes you can make that will save you money in the long-term, such as a Showerdome.

For a relatively small investment, a Showerdome can reduce your power bills. How?

Because the hot air and moisture are trapped inside your shower cubicle, your water doesn’t need to run so hot to keep you warm. Plus, you won’t need to run ventilation fans to try and prevent condensation because there won’t be any!
